women...

And while I am telling her that I love her, all kinds of words dripping with affection and love, and she just said she was in paradise and losing all sense of time and place, and I wax poetic, I look back at her and.... she is asleep.... Women!

AIG: What can you say?....

AIG, the guys who had a super-luxury get-together in a luxury resort after their first bailout, who now after a second bailout still give away 1/6 of a trillion dollar in bonus money to the people who sank them,... yes, that congresswoman was right (although she was talking about bankers): "these people are morons, they don't get it."
What can you say? It's staggering in incompetence, in lack of brains, lack of accountability and decency (even just social decency, to avoid mentioning "moral" decency--obviously unknown to those guys), etc., etc.

What happened to ethics in general and to good ole American work ethics??

Naivete and education

I read in the paper that my state is now in the top ten US states by the rate of graduation from high school, which sounds all fine and dandy until the numbers come in: 72% of teenagers graduate from high school in this "advanced" state... So, more than a quarter of the young people you see around you are not able to function at the level of, or persevere up to, the end of high school? and that is in the top ten of an allegedly advanced nation???
So, how are thigns for the 40th or 50th state? How are thigns in truly poor or deficient nations? Progress, modernity, even decency and brains (as in: making education a priority and a right --and need-- for all) have not yet reached all quarters of the world, and the even base-level educated (end of high school) are still almost a minority?! Sad news indeed; or, in fact, sad reminder -- rather than news.
Let's not be too proud of ranking in the top ten....

Spring

Spring is here, morphing soon into summer, with its light, its white sun, its warmth (soon: heat and extreme humidity)...
It was quite a winter, in many ways, but the tunnel ran to its end and now rebirth and summer hibernation in the oppressive, blinding heat are coming.
It will be a long summer again, maybe, but it is time for it. Fatalistic and yet there is some freedom in accepting one's fate...
