The Joy of choosing a new book

Ah, for us, dinosaurs who read, there is the moment when you finished your book and now comes the time to choose the next one.
Shall I read another in my area of professional/intellectual interest (military/colonial wars, in my case)? shall I read something literary instead? Or what about a little summer, lighter, reading?

Thre is the pile of the previous choices (that led to the one I just finished) still waiting, shall I go back to some other pile in the bedroom (the pile that's been waiting longer)?

Will it be a last minute/impulse choice, or will it be a whittling down process from a choice of say... eight, down to three, or five, and then, decision.
